Welcome to the “year of the self.”

At age 3, your child is beginning to understand that they’re a distinct individual. They may start to use the pronoun “I” and express strong preferences about everything from food to clothing. They’re likely more aware now of both their own emotions and the feelings of others. You may see them role-play different feelings during pretend play as they practice ways to cope with big emotions.

Letters and numbers are starting to make more sense to your child, too. Through play, you can help them explore letter sounds, counting, and sequencing, all concepts that will eventually help them read, write, and do math.

The 3-year-old Play Kits are designed to help you guide your child through all these new discoveries. These open-ended playthings, puzzles, games, and real-life tools all support your child’s development during the “year of the self.”

The Observer Play Kit

  • Identify and process emotions
  • Encourage independence and self care

  • Practice being a helper with a practical life tool

After play studies, weeks of in-home testing, and thousands of customer surveys, we are excited to introduce two new items to The Enthusiast Play Kit for months 28, 29, 30.

Inside you’ll find a fresh new take on the Pinkies Up Tea Set and the all-new Emotion Match Mirror & Card Set designed to help your child recognize and name emotions—a big step toward building empathy.

The Pinkies Up Tea Set with its teapot and cups holds liquids for enhanced pretend (and pour) play. We’ve also added placemats with place setting graphics to encourage “setting the table for tea time.” By including two placemats, we’re inviting your child to engage in two-person early social and pretend play. The teacups have new handles to allow for a secure grasp and to help your child develop their palmar pinch (and for an even better “Cheers!” experience 😍).

A key part of emotional intelligence is being able to recognize what people are feeling by their facial expressions. With the addition of the Emotion Match Mirror & Card Set, your child will be able to work on and practice this skill. Each card depicts 6 different emotions—from sad and disgusted to surprised and happy, and more. Using the mirror, they can try to match their face to the expression on each card. Exploring emotions in a playful way allows the opportunity for you and your child to have simple but important conversations about emotions: “This is how I look when I’m angry.” “What are some things you do when you’re angry?”

These thoughtful updates were made with you and your child in mind. Our Play Kits for toddlers focus on helping your child practice, refine, and grow key developmental skills with unique playthings that are interactive and engaging ❤ We are happy to offer subscribers who received the previous version of The Enthusiast Play Kit (within the last 90 days) $15 toward new items, available in our Subscriber Shop. Please check your email for access.

Why we update our products

Our product update philosophy helps us deliver on our core value: “driven to innovate.”

We are continually listening and learning. While each new product is the result of more than 30 touch points, we learn the most from you—and the hundreds of thousands of families who bring Lovevery products into their homes. Thank you for welcoming us into yours.

FAQs

If you purchased the Enthusiast Play Kit in the last 90 days, you should have received an email inviting you to access the Subscriber Shop to purchase these updated items. We are happy to offer subscribers who received the previous version of this Play Kit within this time frame a $15 credit to be used towards these new items. If you fall into this group, but did not receive an email, please reach out to our Customer Experience team.

At this time, the new items in the Enthusiast Play Kit are available to customers who were most directly affected by this update, meaning the Play Kit was updated while their child was still between 26 and 28 months. If you fall into this group, but did not receive an email, please reach out to our Customer Experience team.

We are constantly working to improve our products, which may result in periodic Play Kit updates. We are listening to our Lovevery families and grateful for the feedback we receive on product surveys.

While these Play Kit updates occasionally include exciting new products, we also make minor improvements to playthings to provide an even better play experience. For example, we occasionally update images, improve materials for sensory play, and make minor dimension adjustments so our playthings are ideal for your child.

The setbacks and challenges that come with learning are frustrating. As a parent, it’s hard to watch your child struggle with a task, and even harder to see them give up. Playthings and activities that can be made easier or harder are key to building the confidence and persistence to keep trying.

For example, whether your child doesn’t know any letters yet, knows all the sounds they make, or is somewhere in between, they can play (and win!) the Montessori Movable Alphabet Game. The “prize” is a matching Montessori Language Object—our play studies found these really motivate children and encourage them to continue playing.

Tools to handle frustration will benefit your child now and as they grow. The Calming Circle and Breathing Activities Guide teach mindful breathing techniques. In calm moments, you and your child can practice taking slow “belly breaths.” Knowing some breathing activities will help your child feel more prepared to work through difficult emotions.

The accompanying Play Guide for The Persister Play Kit offers helpful tips on managing frustration, ways to extend learning with the playthings and tools, and DIY activities.

Have you noticed your child is eager to understand, maybe asking “Why?” more than before? Through wondering and testing, your child develops critical thinking skills.

The playthings in The Examiner Play Kit are designed to facilitate critical thinking by making abstract concepts more concrete. Through games and useful tools, harder-to-grasp ideas like empathy, time, and math are broken down in ways that make these tough concepts fun to learn.

Understanding how other people feel is hard—for adults, too 🙃 The Show, Tell & Think Empathy Game is an interactive game that helps your child build an understanding of how other people feel by providing three ways to practice taking someone else’s perspective.

It’s also hard to be a child and not understand when different events in your life are happening. The Plan Ahead Week Board makes it easier for your 4-year-old to visualize what happened, what’s happening, and what will happen soon.

Early math concepts can be confusing and frustrating to understand. The Modeling Sand and the Unit Block Builders & Activity Cards add sensory play into the mix so your child can see and feel quantity and numbers, combining and dividing. Research has found positive effects of multisensory activities on young children’s math learning.*

Every Play Kit includes The Play Guide. It offers prompts, questions, and activity ideas to help you support this “Why?” phase.

Life is full of connections, and your 4-year-old is hard at work trying to figure them out. The more your child understands the “how” and “why” behind what happens in their day-to-day life, the easier it becomes for them to learn to adjust to changes and challenges.

The Connector Play Kit focuses on flexible thinking, an executive function skill that allows your child to investigate, solve problems, and adapt to change. Everything within this Kit is designed to provide fun ways for your child to practice this crucial skill.

The Wooden Modular Village & Pathways, for example, encourages your child to create scenes and stories differently each time they play, using the same materials in a new way. Tools like the Daily Helper Board show your child that different tasks require different amounts of help—there are things “I can do by myself” and things “We can do together.”

Flexible thinking is a skill that must be learned, practiced, and re-learned, and that’s what The Connector Play Kit is designed to help your 4-year-old do. Like all of our Play Kits, The Connector comes with a Play Guide with ways to play, helpful tips, and valuable insights into the skills your child is developing now.

The more your almost-5-year-old understands about the world around them, the more aware they become of how things work and the sequence in which things happen. Being able to plan is an important strategy skill your child needs to set and achieve goals.

The Planner Play Kit taps into your child’s growing awareness and offers ways to practice thinking ahead. In the Rover Route game, for example, your child must navigate around rocks and rovers to collect a gemstone and return it safely to their home base. Through play, your child learns to map out a sequence of steps to reach their goal.

Another skill needed for planning ahead is time management. Even though your child wants to understand it, time is confusing and abstract. The Plan & Prepare Clock is a working clock that includes 5-, 10-, and 15-minute time increment bars that attach to it. These bars give your child a visual, tangible way to track time passing.

Inside the Play Guide you’ll find helpful tips on how to help your child practice predicting outcomes, along with ways you can model your own time management. You’ll also find expert tips and activities that you can do with things around the house to bring fun and learning to your child’s play as they transition to a 5-year-old.

Do you know why age 4 is sometimes called “The Lost Year”?

To some parents, it can feel a little bit like an in-between phase. But the idea of a “lost” year couldn’t be more wrong. In fact, this year is a critical time of growth and learning.

This is the time to build an important skill set known as executive function. These skills are among the biggest predictors of academic achievement, and your child will use them for the rest of their life. They help us stay focused, persist through frustration, organize and plan, and regulate emotions.

Your child was born with the capacity to do these things, but development doesn’t happen on its own. Executive function must be learned, practiced, and re-learned. Each of The Play Kits for 4-year-olds includes tools and playthings to build flexible thinking, critical thinking, frustration tolerance, and planning ahead.

Have you ever wondered how your child’s favorite Lovevery plaything came to be? You may already know that we partner with early childhood experts and researchers. But listening to families like yours is an essential part of how we ensure that our products inspire joyful play, connection, and learning.

By joining the Lovevery Research Community, you can help guide our creation process in ways that best fit your interest and availability. Whether you live in the Boise area or not, you can influence future products through surveys, interviews, product testing, and more.

The Lovevery Lab: learning through play

Are you local to the Boise area? Sign up to participate in on-site product testing for a chance to visit The Lovevery Lab. Opened in September of 2021, the lab has expanded the ways we can connect with and learn directly from Lovevery customers. Since then, our product research team has welcomed more than 600 families who have helped test new playthings and inspired improvements to existing ones.

How to join the Lovevery Research Community

Wherever you are, you can influence design, inform research, and explore new playthings by joining the Lovevery Research Community. Choose the research opportunities that work for your family—you’re welcome to participate in as many or as few as you like.

Sign-up takes less than 5 minutes—just answer a few questions about yourself, your child, and the type of research you’d like to participate in. Our researchers will share opportunities to participate as soon as they’re available—we’re looking forward to meeting you and your child soon ❤

Ways you can be part of Lovevery’s work and mission

  • Home visit by Lovevery researchers

Research community members local to Boise, Idaho, may sign up for an in-home visit lasting about one hour. Members of the Lovevery research and product innovation team will observe your child’s natural play and gather feedback from you.

  • Product testing in your home

Would you love to test new playthings but are outside the Boise area? Sign up for in-home product testing. To date, we have teamed up with Lovevery families in the United States, Washington, D.C., and Europe.

  • Interviews and Focus Groups

Help us better understand both you and your child’s needs by participating in either one-on-one interviews or focus groups. These are global opportunities which can be conducted virtually and range from 15 to 60 minutes.

  • Online surveys

One of the most flexible ways to participate in the Lovevery Research Community, online surveys are available to Lovevery families worldwide. Most consist of four to five questions and take only a few minutes to complete.

Lovevery’s mission is right in our name—we love every baby and child. Today I’m so proud to say that we’re further realizing that mission by better serving more families.

As you know, our Play Kits are staged by a child’s age. This works for many families, but I know firsthand that it’s not ideal for every child, especially children with disabilities and learning exceptionalities.

Rob, Jessica, and Jessica’s daughter, Bea

My brother Rob has an intellectual disability. Growing up, I remember seeing how he lit up when he played and learned in ways that worked for him. The “right” play for Rob was never tied to his chronological age—it was about matching his specific abilities with his unique interests, like pouring water at the sink and reading picture books. Instead of an “age-based” approach, Rob thrives with a “skills-based approach.”

I’ve always wanted Lovevery to provide those “light up” moments for children who are developing on their own unique timelines…so today I have an announcement that’s incredibly special to me:

Lovevery is launching our new Disability Support Service!

How the Disability Support Service works

  • Next, the Specialist will suggest the perfect Playthings for your child. Your new Lovevery play essentials will include a customized Play Guide, with innovative ideas to engage your child.
  • If you’d like to subscribe, the Specialist will help you create a flexible, customized delivery schedule for your Play Kits.
  • We invite you to keep in touch, and continue the conversation to build on your child’s progress.

Lovevery’s Disability Expert Council

To advise us as we launch this first phase, we’ve recruited a Disability Expert Council with clinical, academic, and lived experience of disability.

Lovevery’s Disability Expert Council: Destini Ann; Dr. Kate Barrett; Rachel Coley, MS, OT/L; Germaine Graham; Eileen Lamb; Dr. Fiona Moola; Dr. Vivian Oberling; Morénike Giwa Onaiwu, Ph.D.; Rebekah Taussig, Ph.D.

Lovevery’s Disability Support Specialist

I’m also thrilled to introduce our Disability Support Specialist, Maral Amani. Maral is a Doctor of Physical Therapy with deep knowledge of child development and a warm, compassionate approach.

Dr. Maral Amani, Lovevery’s Disability Support Specialist

Maral might suggest:

  • Sequencing Lovevery’s Let’s Map It Out Routine Cards from The Helper Play Kit to make a “transition path” for a 9-year-old child who’s on the autism spectrum and who thrives when she knows what to expect in her day
  • Creative ways to place the Black & White Card Sets in The Looker Play Kit to engage a 3-year-old child with a visual impairment
  • Innovative pairings of Lovevery items, such as reading the ‘How I Feel’ book from The Explorer Play Kit while playing with the Wooden Emotion Dolls from The Observer Play Kit to engage a 6-year-old child’s interest as they work on emotional regulation and expressive language
  • How the Slide & Seek Ball Run from The Babbler Play Kit can help motivate a 5-year-old child with cerebral palsy to increase his hand dexterity and core strength through play

Each suggestion is customized to your child’s interests, goals, and abilities—a skills-centered approach that supports their development on their own unique timeline.

More Playthings, books, and resources to come

We know that thousands of families, therapists, and educators already use Lovevery Playthings to support children with disabilities, neurodiversity, and learning exceptionalities. In the future, we’ll be launching even more Playthings, books, and parent resources that are disability-focused. I’m excited that this service makes Lovevery accessible to even more families.
